o Technology: opportunity or crisis; exploration of how to capitalize
on new opportunities (for example, global markets, consumer intensity,
add value) and the different strategies that exist to take advantage of
those opportunities
o The identification of strategic applications does not follow the
traditional IT methodology of systems analysis and design. The
definition of a strategic application is one that enables the goals of
the organization and gives you a competitive advantage.
o The importance of the business case in choosing which application to
implement will be explored and defined in the program.
o The executives should come away with a better understanding of how
to focus their organization, what technologies are available, what
technologies should be used in their organization, and where
information technologies can make a direct impact to the bottom line.

This slide shows the mission of HP's PSO and how it relates to HP's
corporate direction.
o Working with HP's other computing systems organizations, PSO's
primary charter is to support HP's corporate direction and strategies
in leading open systems, client/server technologies. It does this with
consulting and educational services that help customers apply these
technologies to their business. The overall objective is to assist
customers so they can optimize productivity and gain the competitive
advantage in their business.
o The PSO and its services are designed to provide you with as little
or as much help as you need to take advantage of the open systems
technologies and tools that you'll see at the CTGroup Executive
Program.

CTG12PSO.GAL
************
..pictureA:\CTG\CTG12PSO.GAL,65535,49151,1,43,13,
This slide gives an overview of PSO--how its structured and supported
to offer the most experienced consultants and instructors in the open
systems, client/server computing disciplines.
o As a worldwide organization, PSO has over 3,500 consultants and
instructors who are supported by another 16 thousand HP technical
support people. In addition to this infrastructure, PSO has advanced
delivery tools, proven methodologies, and experience to help you
quickly reap the benefits that open client/server technologies offer.
o The PSO has Industry Consulting Practices and an Open Systems
Technology Consulting Practice. The Industry Practices focus on the
business and computing needs that are unique to industries. Organized
around specific industries, these practices use Centers of Expertise to
perform process modeling, strategic assessments, and other industry-
specific consulting services. The next slide goes into more detail on
the focuses of the Technology Practice. Both consulting practices work
closely with each other to define the best technology solution for a
unique business/industry strategy or need.
o The PSO has systems integration capabilities to implement the open
systems solution for your business. Applying a standard project
management methodology, expert project managers will manage and
coordinate the subcontractors and technology partners often required in
large, open system, client/server solutions. HP has long recognized
the critical role of partners in open systems, client/server computing
solutions. Along with HP's extensive experience and excellent
relationships with partners, PSO utilizes a formal partners program to
fill areas of needed expertise to ensure that your open systems
solution is the best and smoothest it can be.
o In addition to the many standard UNIX system training courses, PSO
offers customized and on-site courses that help entire organizations
incorporate and assimilate the changes involved in moving to open
systems environments.
o Lastly, PSO consultants and instructors go through rigorous training
and development programs to be certified in their technology or
methodology disciplines. Certification extends beyond classroom
training to actual application of techniques and technology in real-
world experiences. There are certification programs in Project and
Program Management, Software Development for Distributed Applications,
Networked Client/Server Architecture Planning and Design, Information
Management Systems, and Mainframe Data Center Environments.

PSO Open Systems and Client/Server Technology Focuses
************
CTG13PSO.GAL
************
..pictureA:\CTG\CTG13PSO.GAL,65535,49151,1,43,13,
This slide shows where PSO focuses in open systems, client/server
technologies.
o The PSO has focused its resources in the way of national programs
and infrastructures in specific open systems, client/server
technologies. Four of the major technical focus areas include
Mainframe Alternatives and Downsizing, IT Architecture Planning and
Implementation, Information Integration, and Networking and System
Management.
o These focused technical resources ensure that best practices and
technical solutions are shared and improved upon to augment the
capabilities and resources of the consultants working on your
technology solutions. Examples of how these technologies are applied
to your business issues include:
áááo Your need to reduce operating and support costs would require
applying both mainframe downsizing methods and network and system
management technologies.
áááo Getting you fast and easy access to information requires a
flexible IT architecture that can incorporate new information as well
as the current information you have access to.
o These focus areas were chosen because this is where HP has the
experience and expertise. The PSO keeps current on all the latest
technologies and how they can be applied to business needs. There are
areas where PSO can help you prepare for your open systems,
client/server environments and fill your skills shortages in the short
run to let you focus on your business and building the skills you need
for the future.
o The information integration focus area is where CTGroup's executive
program fits. The PSO has dedicated consultants to support the rapid
application development methodology and tools presented in CTGroup
executive seminars as well as other open systems and information
integration tools.

CTG14PSO.GAL
************
..pictureA:\CTG\CTG14PSO.GAL,65535,49151,1,43,13,
This slide highlights PSO services that are most relevant to CTGroup's
rapid application development tools and methodology.
o CTGroup's Executive Seminar, its tools, and other training use open
systems technologies for rapid development of strategic applications.
The seminars follow a philosophy that quickly proves and convinces
organizational staff of the power of open systems. This approach also
allows you to measure the benefits of open systems and provides a quick
start in your move to open systems. The PSO has specific services to
support and help you successfully implement this rapid application
development approach.
o The PSO can help you identify the right strategic application to
prototype--one that will give you the strategic information benefits
you seek while minimizing your risk of unrealistic timelines or results
that fall short.
o PSO consultants have been extensively trained on CTGroup tools and
can work with your organization team to customize an open systems
demonstration for your organization or develop a rapid prototype of
your strategic application.
o Throughout the entire process, either in this rapid prototyping
method or in your long-term planned move to open systems, PSO's
technical education in open systems, client/server technologies helps
your organization adjust to the technology changes they encounter.
o After your prototype, PSO systems integration and project management
services can help you plan and implement the pilot to ensure an on-
time, on-budget project implementation.

The HP Way to a More Open Environment
************
CTG15PSO.GAL
************
..pictureA:\CTG\CTG15PSO.GAL,65535,49151,1,43,13,
The PSO has created a roadmap of professional services that will help
customers through the process of moving to open environments. This
roadmap can be used to assist customers in identifying where they are
in the process and then customize a portfolio of services that will
take them on the most direct route for creating an open environment.
o Needs Assessment--Whether informally or formally, customers assess
their own needs or seek help in evaluating their situation to determine
where they need focus to develop the best path to open systems.
o Vision and Business Strategy--Start with an (entire) organization's
vision of open systems and combine this vision with its business
strategy to meet the changing demands of business and competitive
environments.
o IS Strategy--From the business strategy, critical success factors
and goals are set that lay the foundation for the client's information
systems strategy to achieve these goals (such as who needs what
information, when, and where).
o IT Strategy--From the IS strategy, a technology strategy or
architecture determines how technology will be used to produce and
deliver this information and how they can be positioned to incorporate
future business changes and new technologies.
o Transition Plan--Customers are not going to throw out what they have
and replace everything with open systems. A transition plan will help
them leverage their current IT investments and minimize the risks and
major impact on their information users.
o Pilot Development and on . . .--These strategies and plans help form
the basis of a pilot led by key technical and user team leaders within
the company. The next steps are implementation and deployment or
rollout to the rest of the organization, followed by ongoing support
and management.
Not all customers go through this process top down. CTGroup's rapid
development process selects one strategic application and cuts quickly
through to prototyping and a pilot project. At some point before,
after, or throughout this process, customers will go through these
steps to move to their open environment.
PSO offers services that map directly into this customer process to
provide the help where you need it most. Behind each of these steps,
HP's PSO can help you evaluate your needs and required decisions to
ensure you have strong linkage between your technology solutions and
your business strategies.
o Education forms the foundation and runs throughout the entire
process to ensure success of the move to a more open environment. The
arrows pointing to the right signify forward movement--education is key
to developing and keeping the forward momentum.

HP Educational Services
************
CTG16PSO.GAL
************
..pictureA:\CTG\CTG16PSO.GAL,65535,49151,1,43,13,
This slide represents a snapshot of educational services offered by HP.
HP has over 50 seminars and lecture/lab courses that are part of the
open systems curriculum. These seminars are designed to introduce
managers, developers, and administrators to the technology solutions
that can best enhance the "openness" of current and future computing
environments. Specific training courses teach software development
professionals, system administrators, and end users how open system
technologies interact as well as how to implement, administer, and
utilize applications and systems in open environments.
The curriculum encompasses technologies that span operating systems,
user environments, networked services, databases, languages, tools, and
hardware and application interfaces.
o Offerings listed under Open Systems Awareness are for those who want
to gain high levels of understanding of the concepts and capabilities
of open systems, client/server technologies.
o Seminars and courses listed under Technology Understanding are for
those who need to understand and evaluate the capabilities of various
technologies. And finally, there is a broad and deep range of seminars
and courses for those who are implementing open systems technologies in
the development, user, operating, network, and database environments.
o HP offers a very extensive UNIX system curriculum and has been doing
so for the past 10 years. Courses are available on a wide range of
subjects for beginning-, intermediate-, and advanced-level users. Key
topic areas are administration, software development, database
management, programming languages, and networking.
o Some seminars and courses provide information about the latest
technologies and are not tied to a specific vendor's implementation.
Some lecture/lab courses focus on HP's implementation of standards and
technologies; however, you can easily apply at least 75 percent of the
content to other vendor platforms. These courses are ideal for those
in multiple-vendor environments. You can take one course and leverage
it across your entire network of varying implementations.
o There are over 40 worldwide education centers that regularly
schedule most of the curriculum. You can be assured of the consistent
high-quality instruction and environment regardless of which center you
or your staff attend. Each education center is set up for an ideal
learning environment that promotes class interaction and hands-on
experience.
o All HP instructors have real-world experience and have gone through
rigorous instructor certification programs. They continually get
involved in activities that keep them current with new technologies,
and they often interact with the divisions that have created standards
and new technologies.
o Most customer education courses and seminars can be delivered onsite
at customer facilities, or a course can be exclusively delivered to one
customer at HP's facilities. All courses can be tailored to your
specific needs.
